Character Education Trait
Our Character trait word for the month of March is RESPONSIBILITY. This month we will be working on understanding the concept of responsibility as well as discussing why it is important, and how it could impact our social and academic success.
We will be commending responsible behaviors and talking about ways we can show responsibility for ourselves, for relationships with classmates, teachers, friends and family, for our education and overall character. We will also highlight ways showing responsibility creates opportunities for triumph and growth.
A few things to remember when reviewing and discussing responsible behaviors with our students; do what you are supposed to do, Persevere: keep trying!, always do your best, use self-control, be self-disciplined, think before you act—consider the consequences, and be accountable for your choices.

We will continue the character trait tickets. When students are seen displaying responsible actions they will be rewarded with "Keep Going; Awarded for Perseverance" tickets. These tickets allow students the opportunity to be nominated for Eagle of the week and month. Their names will be announced in the morning on Fridays, and for Eagles of the month the students are treated to lunch with the principal!

HOW TO BE A RESPONSIBLE PERSON
Be reliable and dependable; when you agree to do something, do it. Take care of your own business. Don't make others do what you are supposed to do.
Take responsibility for your actions; don't make excuses or blame others.
Use your head; think before you act; imagine the consequences.

Ms. Perez’s 10th Grade English class worked on presentation skills last week. Students were charged with researching how to open their choice of business – reporting on everything from loans to licensing – and presented their findings (including samples or mock-ups) to their class. Some interesting business concepts were developed from corsets to “healthy” candy shops and everything in between.

7th Graders Chosen for Summer Program

Pikes Peak Prep (PPP) is proud to announce that six academically talented PPP 7th graders have been selected to attend an amazing early-summer program sponsored by the Colorado Springs School (http://www.css.org/home.php)
The program will guide 32 total students (selected from across the city) through an intensive three-week program focused on critical thinking, communications, collaboration, creativity and character. The students will enjoy daily robotics and communications classes as well as healthy outdoor activities such as geo caching, aimed at developing the entire spectrum of problem solving and creative thinking. This awesome experience will be provided to the selected PPP students free of charge thanks to the support of a community friend of Pikes Peak Prep. (Thank you!)

This week at PPP, Ms. Kimball’s class did an writing exercise where they wrote to an incoming fifth grader about their experience at Pikes Peak Prep. Abby shared her thoughts…
“I remember my first day of school. I was a little bit scared because I didn’t know anyone. Also, I was worried about getting good grades ... All of these things were scary, but I was also excited because I wanted to learn more. As it turned out, I love Pikes Peak Prep because it is very exciting. My favorite part about fifth grade is my teacher. She makes learning fun. Fifth grade is awesome!” Other classmates liked the 5th grade science experiments, singing songs about multiplication and the states… and meeting new friends!

2012 Mock PPP Presidential Election

The 2012 Mock Pikes Peak Prep Presidential speeches AND election were held last week.

The 3 speeches took place after Mr. Vorster made his morning announcements. Ms. Levicki reviewed the requirements to be President of the United States, the voting process, and then the three students presented their speeches.

The students presented in the same order as their names appear on the ballot. Students were reminded to really listen to the speeches, and to vote based on the ISSUES.

The Government students were very excited (and anxious) about the final results. After a full day of waiting the results revealed that Chauncey Harrison won the student vote, and Dallas Holeyfield won the teacher vote!

$10 Oil Change...Now that is a deal!

Pikes Peak Prep needs your assistance with a very easy fundraiser.

We are currently selling $10.00 oil changes from Dave Solan Kia. With the certificate you will receive an oil change with a complimentary Multi-Point Inspection where your brakes, belts, hoses, tires and lights will be checked. Up to 5 quarts of conventional oil with a premium oil filter will be included. The certificate is good through 2012 and a limit of two per vehicle.

Most importantly:

Pikes Peak Prep receives all proceeds. The entire $10 for each certificate is kept by Pikes Peak Prep. We currently have 500 certificates to sell.

Edible Plant and Animal Cells

High school Biology students this week showed off their knowledge of plant and animal cells by creating their own cell models. Students were very creative in the materials used to represent the shape and function of a cell as well as the organelles (tiny organs) that are responsible for the metabolic activity of a cell. Some cells were constructed from craft items, cakes, brownies and even cheese! In addition, elementary students were invited to view and ask questions. This provided the perfect opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and mastery of state standards by explaining/describing to our young guests. This was not only fun and educational but delicious!

Colorado Living HIstory Project = )

The Fourth Grade recently worked on the Colorado Living History Project. Each of the students researched a historical figure or group from Colorado. If a historical person was chosen, the student had to research all pertinent information and be able to pretend to be that person when presenting and writing a journal entry about them. The students created a visual aid that outlined the important facts about the historical person. Some of the students earned extra points for dressing as the historical figure. All the students participated in this super-fun, learning experience!

Veteran Peter C. Lemon visits Pikes Peak Prep

Pikes Peak Prep was honored to receive a visit from Peter C. Lemon who spent time with our young elementary students. Mr. Lemon is one of the youngest surviving recipients of America's highest award: The 'Congressional Medal of Honor'. Vastly outnumbered in a fierce enemy attack in Vietnam, Mr. Lemon assisted in saving the lives of his team. Although wounded
numerous times, he refused to be evacuated until the enemy had retreated and his
injured comrades were airlifted to safety. He is an inductee in the elite Ranger Hall of Fame.

Peter C. Lemon is a dynamic motivational speaker. He is an Ambassador of courage, determination and triumph, and through his visit to our school he profoundly enriches the lives of our youth.

Acclaimed author of Beyond the Medal, A Journey from Their Hearts and Executive Producer of the Emmy winning PBS Documentary Beyond the Medal of Honor, Mr. Lemon donated his book to the 32,000 secondary schools in the United States and the television documentary, with curriculum, to 17,000 public and private high schools to inspire our youth to become worthy citizens

On May 1, 2009 Mr. Lemon was presented the coveted Outstanding American by Choice Award by President Barack Obama at The White House, recognizing his life of professional and civic contribution.

Mr. Lemon talked about being brave and having courage. Students were able to look closely at the “Congressional Medal of Honor”. He presented each student with his book and two photos, one with himself and President Obama. He autographed his picture with the following “Pikes Peak Prep Students: Respect and protect your freedoms. Make the right choice and live your dreams! Peter C. Lemon”. Everyone at Pikes Peak Prep cannot wait for his return visit to talk to our upper classes.

Enough Ice for Climbing

Shaun Galvez, 10^th grader, at Pikes Peak Prep enjoys ice climbing when he is not at school. Shaun recently was ice climbing at Helen Hunt Falls in North Cheyenne Canyon. Shaun became interested in ice climbing through the Pikes Peak Prep Rock Climbing Club that is held every Wednesday at City Rock located in downtown Colorado Springs. The climbing club is only one of the many clubs that is offered at Pikes Peak Prep. Students meet on a weekly basis to participate in experiences that include yoga, gardening, science, photography, and of course climbing. These clubs are lead be the dedicated staff.

Sophomores Create Books to Honor Veterans

This past November, Ms. Perez's Sophomore classes did a very unqiue project in honor of Veteran's day.The students were given the assignment to research and create a book using the following website: studentpublishing.com On the website, the students can choose the color of the cover of their book, create a title page, dedication page, and author’s page. The dedication pages were as diverse as the students. Some dedicated the books to family members, others to famous people, some to their heritage, and still others to the veteran that they had written about. Some students wrote about famous people, such as Colin Powell. Others wrote about family and friends and because they have such a wide diversity of students, they also had some students write about veterans from other countries such as Japan and Russia. Ms. Perez, their teacher, was very pleased with the jobs that they did.

We are mid-way through the year. Here is a friendly reminder about our dress code policy at Pikes Peak Prep!

DRESS CODE WEAR GUIDANCE

Students are expected to be dressed neatly, be well groomed and give a general good appearance. Approved dress code clothing needs to be of appropriate size/fit, with no holes and in good repair, and must be worn as intended by the policy, and by the standard of fit discussed elsewhere in this policy. A student can be out of compliance for wearing non-approved items, or by wearing approved items in a manner that is sloppy, immodest or otherwise inappropriate.

þ SHIRTS: A Pikes Peak Prep polo shirt or a solid colored polo style shirt (collar with three buttons; long or short sleeve) is to be tucked in at all times. Appropriate business attire shirts are allowed in lieu of polo shirts and must be tucked in.

þ PANTS/SHORTS: Pants and shorts for both boys and girls must be tan, black, grey or navy blue and worn at the waist with a belt. Acceptable pants are a cotton blend: Chinos, Khakis, or Dockers. The length of shorts will not be shorter than two inches above the knee and cannot go below the knee. Appropriate business pants (i.e. dress, suit) are allowed as well.

Not permitted: Trendy styles, Jeggins, Capri’s, pant sagging, tight pants, cargos, flairs, carpenters, sweats/warm-ups, zip offs or leggings. Denim material or jeans of any kind may not be worn.

þ SKIRTS/ SKORTS/JUMPERS: Skirts, skorts and jumpers must be tan, black, grey or navy blue and must be no shorter than two inches above the knee.

þ SOCKS/ TIGHTS: Girls must wear solid-colored, navy blue, red, white, or black socks or tights. Nylons/pantyhose must be flesh colored. Leggings and footless tights are not allowed. Boys must wear solid-colored, navy blue, white, or black socks.

þ BELTS: Belts in basic colors of navy blue, brown or black, must be worn by both girls and boys with garments that have loops. Buckles should be plain and conservative in style and size. Belts must be worn even if they do not show, such as with a college sweatshirt, vest, or a sweater.

Not permitted: embellishments, spikes, metal protrusions, beaded or painted designs.

þ SHOES: Shoes must be worn at all times. For safety reasons, all footwear must be tied/buckled/zipped, etc. at all times and heels/soles must not be more than 1 inch. All shoes must be closed-toed and have a closed heel.

Not permitted: sandals, Crocks, “heelies”, flip flops or slippers are permitted.

þ GYM SHOES: Every student will need a pair of non-marking, limited logoed tennis shoes for P.E.

þ SWEATERS: Sweaters, cardigans and sweater vests may be worn as part of the uniform provided a uniform shirt is underneath and the collar is showing. They must be solid in color and free of logos, designs and hoods.

þ COLLEGE SWEATSHIRTS: Hoodless college sweatshirts may be worn as part of the regular uniform provided a uniform shirt is underneath and the collar is showing.

þ JACKETS/OUTERWEAR: Students may wear their choice of outerwear to and from school and during recess, but outerwear will not be worn in the classrooms. Students may wear a winter jacket or raincoat while walking in and out of the school building. Once inside any classroom all outerwear must be removed.

ADDITIONAL DRESS GUIDANCE

þ BACKPACKS: Students backpacks must be limited to academic style and content and remain in the lockers or cubbies.

þ HAIR: All students shall maintain their hair in a clean, well-groomed manner. Hairstyles must comply with the general dress code guidelines (neatness, avoidance of showiness, etc.). Hair must not interfere with student’s vision and/or cover the eyes.

þ HAIR ACCESSORIES-GIRLS/HATS: Girls may wear hair accessories that are not distracting.

No hats of any kind, including baseball caps, may be worn in the building.

þ JEWELRY: All jewelry must be conservative, non-offensive, and not draw undue attention. Excessive jewelry such as dog collars, large neck chains, pocket chains, safety pins, key or wallet chains, and large amounts or numbers of jewelry items are not permitted for safety reasons and for lack of compliance with the overall intent for student appearance.

þ PIERCING: Girls and boys may wear one set of small (no larger than a dime) discreet earrings. Large dangling or large hoop-style earrings are not allowed for safety reasons.

No other pierced jewelry will be allowed for boys or girls.

þ TATTOOS: Visible tattoos are prohibited for all students.

þ TIES: May be worn with dress shirts only and must be “business” appropriate.

Dress Code Infraction Consequences

First Infraction: Reminder. Teacher contacts parent/ guardian and informs them that they must bring proper dress attire.

Second Infraction: Referral. Teacher contacts parent/guardian and informs them that this is the second infraction; a third is grounds for disciplinary action. Proper dress must be delivered.

Third and Final Infraction: Disciplinary Action. The teacher contacts parent and informs them that this is the student’s third infraction and that they must bring proper dress attire. Disciplinary action is at the discretion of the Principal and Dean.

Frequent dress code violations, beginning at the total of three, are considered to be habitually defiant and disruptive behavior.

Pikes Peak Prep Families enjoy a Holiday Concert

Zoriyah Keyes, Ambassador student leader for Pikes Peak Prep, welcomed the families to the Pikes Peak Prep holiday concert that was held on December 16. Over four hundred friends and families attended the concert. The music department is led by Thomas Willmann who spent endless hours putting together this event. The Youth Choir (Kindergarten – 6^th) sang some favorites: “Deck the Halls", "Winter Wonderland" and "Sleigh Ride”.

We were entertained with true harmony from the Glee Club and PJ Gage, Community Outreach Director. These girls spend every Wednesday after school working on their songs. Their music included “Jingle Bells", "Deck the Rooftop" and "You’re a Mean one, Mr. Grinch!”

Our audience was stunned by the talent of James Duckery, 9^th grade, who played “Metroplis” on his Tenor Saxaphone. Lastly, our symphonic band, 5^th – 8^th grade, provided magic with “It’s Holiday Time", "Jingle Bells Fantasy" and "Carol of the Bells”.

Before the concert began there were eight craft vendors that set up holiday booths for our families to accommodate some last minute shopping. Many people were recognized for their hard work and commitment. A personal thanks was given to the staff and parents for giving up their time to organize and set up the reception after the concert.

Baking Cookies for the Holidays

The Ambassadors went to work baking cookies that they could deliver to the area nursing homes. Over eight dozen cookies were baked in the school ovens while our students took time to decorate them. Of course there was a little fun involved in this activity. And we were very lucky that the cookies ended up in the tins for delivery.

The Ambassadors also decided to provide three needy families with a Walmart gift card to help these families with their holiday celebrations. The Ambassadors raise funds by asking the local community for spare change for the "Change for Change" campaign. Please contact one of the schools Ambassadors to learn more about this fundraising effort.

Science Club Movie Night

The Science Club held another great movie night for all grades. The Elementary students snuggled together in the music room and enjoyed a snack pack while they watched Happy Feet. The older students enjoyed a holiday movie in the science room. Movie nights are scheduled every six weeks as a fundraiser for the Science Club. The money raised will help fund some of the field trips that are scheduled. The next movie night is planned for sometime in February.

Reading Buddies

Important Weather Information

Dear Pikes Peak Prep Community:

The winter season is upon us. We recently made a decision to have a two-hour delay last Monday, December 5. Although we made this decision on Sunday night and had it scrolling on all the TV stations it was confusing because we did not follow District 11. I am so sorry for any confusion that resulted due to our decision.

I am hoping to avoid this type of confusion in the future. There are times that we may NOT follow District 11. We understand that to open or close schools in bad weather has a big effect on families. We also understand that our students are better served, both academically and socially, by being in school.

However, our top priority is the safety of our students. Many times conditions improve within a couple of hours. With this in mind, Pikes Peak Prep will occasionally have a two-hour delay. This allows time for work crews or the weather to improve. Sometimes a two-hour delay may be announced, but because conditions have not improved as expected, the schools may close. Be sure to check back with the TV, PikesPeakPrep.org or call us at 570-7575 ext. Please be advised that if Pikes Peak Prep is announced as closed, that is a final decision and will not be changed.

How do we make our decision?

We make the decision to close or delay school in bad weather based on a careful analysis

of all relevant factors, including:

Information on road conditions from transportation staff and other local officials.
Amount of snow and ice accumulation.
Lack of electricity/heat in buildings.
Temperature and wind chill. Some of our students walk to school
Weather predictions.
Decision of neighboring districts.

How is the public notified?

Local TV stations for up-to-date information on school closings and the Pikes Peak Prep Website, http://www.pikespeakprep.org/ or call 570-7575 ext. 1.

When is the decision made?

The decision must be made by approximately 6:00 AM or earlier so we can notify TV stations, and staff.

Can the decision to stay open be reversed?

Keep in mind, even if weather conditions worsen, we cannot reverse our decision in the morning without endangering students. Once we make the decision to open the school many parents rely on our decision and leave for work.

Although we do our absolute best in this process, we know that often no perfect decision exists. If you feel that it is unsafe for your child to attend school, use your best judgment on whether he or she should attend. We hope this explanation helps everyone understand the process our staff uses to make the best possible decision for everyone in our school.

Samone a.k.a. "UsaMiKo"

Until Pikes Peak Prep 9th grade student, Samone Roberts, walked into my office I knew nothing about Manga.

A little bit of research told me that Manga is the Japanese word for comic. Manga-style comic books, graphic novels and artwork are gaining international popularity. But here was one of our students who had actually taken her artistic talent to put together a comic story and artwork in Manga-style. Samone Robert has been drawing in Manga-style since she was nine years of age.

There are many characteristics that make Manga very distinctive. The largest thing that Manga art is known for is its characters. Manga characters almost always have large eyes, small mouths, and they also usually have abnormal hair color. This type of comic book reads from right-to-left. Most people would consider it backwards. In the early ‘90s, when Manga first came to America, comic companies would print the comics to read left-to-right like an American comic. But most companies nowadays are printing them in their original format. Also, these type of comics are often done in black/white instead of color.

Samone’s story focuses on an agency whose main purpose is to defeat evil monsters called Ink Marks. One agent, LiLa, while working hard does not accomplish much and she blames one of the most popular and successful agents Yumi. The boss of the company requests that both agents co-teach a class for upcoming, new agents. They now have to work together to teach others while defeating an evil monster.

Samone (AKA UsaMiKo*) will continue to expand on the project and is saving money to print copies of it.

Pikes Peak Prep Ambassadors Introduce Fundraising Campaign

Recently fourteen student were selected as the Ambassadors for Pikes Peak Prep Charter School. These Ambassadors represent the school throughout the community with service projects, speaking engagements and business opportunity tours. The Ambassadors represent the diverse school population and are viewed as mentors and leaders of Pikes Peak Prep. These students were provided etiquette and public speaking training at The Warehouse Restaurant, private dining room. Ms. Denise Sutton spent the lunch focusing on etiquette skills that are needed in a professional environment. Our young gentlemen were standing each time our female students needed to leave the table! Everyone learned to always pass to our right and what piece of silver needs to used for each portion of the meal. After lunch, Dawn Dawson (Reflections Advertising) gave our students some valuable advice on public speaking.

Our young Ambassadors were given the opportunity to use their skills at the White Linen Lunch at The Warehouse. There were about 25 guests from nearby churches, ENT Federal Credit Union, Compass Bank, Urban Peak, Pikes Peak Library District, USOC, Comcast Cable, and others that were entertained by 9th grade Pikes Peak Prep students. The Ambassadors greeted their guests as they arrived. Six of the Ambassadors spoke why Pikes Peak Prep is so important to their lives. Lastly, one of our Ambassadors kicked off the fundraiser that these students have decided to focus on this school year, Change for Change. The Pikes Peak Prep Ambassadors decided that they wanted to support families in need that are located in their own school community.

There are families within the Pikes Peak Prep community that can not afford gas, groceries, medication or even utilities. Ambassadors are collecting spare change to support these requests. During the White Linen Lunch the Ambassadors received close to $200.00 to fund requests. One of the clergy members from a nearby church will collect money from their congregation every other Sunday using the Change for Change can to help our students and their cause. The Ambassadors will continue to raise money for their community families and fund these needs throughout the school year.

CenturyLink Employees Give for Thanksgiving

There’s a reason to be thankful at Pikes Peak Prep. All families in need of a Thanksgiving dinners received a full Thanksgiving dinner for six thanks to the donations from local employees of Century Link. On November 18 employees of Century Link delivered Thanksgiving dinners for 20 families at the school. These contributions assisted the Pikes Peak Prep families in making their celebrations truly happy. Thank you so much to the employees at Century Link.

Limo Tours to Everest College!

Everest College sent a Limo to pick up the Pikes Peak Prep students for a tour of the college. For most of the students it was there first time to ride in such luxury. Once they arrived at the college they were greeted by the Everest College staff who provided them information and a tour of the facility. The students were treated to lunch, candy, and even got to ride back to Pikes Peak Prep in the Limo.

Congratulations to the most recent Ben Franklin Award Winners Ms. Stephanie Studebaker and Ms. Lisa Cross. When classes started this August, everyone probably noticed the gorgeous mural painted onto the wall dividing PPP from the empty lot beside it. During the end of last year, Ms. Studebaker noticed the wall was always tagged with “gang-related” signs. Thinking it was a perfect way to improve the school and school community, she along with Ms. Cross set out to change the “artwork” on this wall into something beautiful that displayed our students many talents. Ms. Studebaker took the time and effort to make sure the idea was approved by all those who needed to be notified and Ms. Cross gathered all the supplies and donations needed for the project. With only a month and a half left of the school year, the two teachers along with supervision of other teachers and PPP’s students from 3rd grade and 8th grade set out to turn the wall into a magnificent wall of beauty. Ms. Studebaker, Ms. Cross, and their students are excellent examples of how we can help improve our school and community.

During the PTO Craft Fair (December 9^th), the PTO will be raffling off some “Theme Baskets” and other prizes.

Climb, Climb, Climb!

Pikes Peak Climbing Club

The Rock Climbing club is structured for our 7th-12^th grade and meets every Wednesday from 3:45 p.m. - 6.00 p.m. at CityROCK. Students learn the basics of climbing, knots, belaying techniques, and safety. They will climb indoors and outdoors, visiting such places as Ute Valley Park, Garden of the Gods, Cheyenne Canyon, and other out of town spots. They will rappel, boulder, top rope, and sport climb.

CityROCK has climbing for all ages and abilities. Their gym features climbing walls for leading and top roping, with overhangs, cracks and dry tooling routes for ice training. They also have a large area dedicated to bouldering with a large variety of problems.

Dear Parents,

All grades had a great time doing Day of the Dead activities, including masks and sugar skulls. In November we will be studying the artist Andrea Zittel.

All grades will be designing their own escape vehicle or floating manmadepopsicle sticks, yarn, and clay. The kids are very excited about this project! In the early 1990s, Andrea Zittel began making art in response to her own surroundings and daily routines, creating functional objects that fulfilled the artist’s needs relating to shelter, food, furniture, and clothing. She produced her first "Living Unit"--an experimental structure intended to reduce everything necessary for living into a simple, compact system—as a means of facilitating basic activities within her 200-square-foot Brooklyn storefront apartment. In order to make customized "Living Units" and other usable artworks available to contemporary consumers, Zittel launched the one-woman corporation, A-Z Administrative Services. While some of her modernist-inspired products were designed with the intention of making daily routines easy and efficient, others, such as the pod-like "Escape Vehicles," appealed to fantasies of isolating oneself from the outside world.

7^th Grade: Plants/Cellular Respiration

Often called producers and autotrophs, these organisms are the basis of the energy cycle of life. Without plants, consumers/heterotrophs would not have the energy required to sustain life. Students will be investigating how plants get their nutrients through their structural design- plants are not just a stem and leaves. In addition, we will learn that consumers and producers utilize energy in a process known as Cellular Respiration.

8^th Grade: Seasons

In science there are many misconceptions about why we experience seasons on Earth. One of those is that our distance from the sun determines Winter and Summer. Students will discover that it is the tilt of the Earth, 23.5⁰, toward or away from the Sun is the main determining factor. In addition, we will learn that the tilt and position of the Earth in its revolution around the sun determines Fall and Spring Equinox, and the Summer and Winter Solstice.

Biology: Cells

Cells are the basic unit of life. As students will discover, it was the work of many scientist such as Schleiden, Schwann, Hooke, Van Leuwenhoek and Virchow, who were prominent figures in the discovery of what is a cell, the components of cells, and how cells specialize. Their work was the driving force of the Cell Theory. Students will learn that cells are either prokaryotic or eukaryotic and contain small organ called organelles that are responsible for the maintenance and function of the cell.

Chemistry: Predicting Products

Students have learned that all matter is a product of one of 6 types of chemical reactions. Students have learned to identify the types of bonds that can form between elements which will be their guide to predicting products of various reactions. In addition, we will continue to use our knowledge and skills to balance those equations, as well.

Earth Science: Glaciers, Deserts and Wind

The Ice Age was a period of time when much of the Earth was covered in glaciers. These ice masses have slowly moved over the Earth, down mountain valleys, and steep rock walls leaving behind a changed landscape. Students will discover that these resultant changes can be seen in the form of glacial troughs, hanging valleys, cirques, arêtes, and horns. We will also differentiate between a glacier and an ice sheet. Ice sheets are much larger, land bound, and are found covering Greenland and Antarctica.

Our Character trait word for the month of November is GRATITUDE. This month we will be working on understanding why gratitude is important and how it impacts our future social and academic success.

We will be commending grateful behaviors and discussing ways we can show gratitude for our community and people who serve/work to make our world a better and safer place. As well as showing appreciation for ourselves, in relationships with classmates, teachers, friends and family, in our education and overall character. We will also highlight ways showing gratitude creates opportunities for triumph and growth.

We will continue the character trait tickets. When students are seen displaying grateful actions they will be rewarded with “Caught Being Grateful” tickets. These tickets allow students the opportunity to be nominated for Eagle of the week and month. Their names will be announced in the morning on Fridays, and for Eagles of the month the students are treated to lunch with the principal!

Congrats Katy and Berea!

We currently have two seniors at PPCC. Both took the Accuplacer. Katy Hartlaben, a Junior, passed all three parts. Last year she earned 10 college credits. She is currently enrolled in three classes; Communication 125, English 122, Anthropology 101 and will earn an additional 9 credits at the end of this semester. Right now, we plan on Katy taking 4 classes next semester and earning an additional 12 credits. So at the end of this year she should have 31 credits. Next year, she will easily complete her Associate Degree as a Senior. Way to go Katy!

Berea Olson, a senior also passed the Accuplacer. Last year she earned 3 college credits. This semester she is taking 2 classes; English 121 and Business 115. She should earn 6 credits. So at the end of the semester she should have earned 9 credits. Depending on how successful she is, she will take one or two classes next semester. Therefore, she will have 12 – 15 college credits when she graduates. Awesome job Berea!

We anticipate additional Pikes Peak Prep students joining these two in the Middle College Program next semester. We have over 50 students who just took the Accuplacer in October! Keep up the good work students!

Trunk or Treat or Bus!

Pikes Peak Prep Charter in conjunction with the Hillside Neighborhood Association harvested together a bus full of treats (and wind blown decorations) for local kids as they came out dressed up in characters' from A to Z traveling from trunk to trunk.
The Hillside Community Center sponsors this event every year as a safe alternative for
Trick or Treat for the very little werewolves' and princess' with a
costume competition ages 0-10 as well as a trunk competition.

Young Marine Cpl @ PPP!

During one of the 'Spirit Week' students were encouraged to dress up for 'Career Day'. Ninth grader, Erik Hartleben, displayed his rank, ribbons and uniform which were not borrowed, but have been earned. He is in the Young Marines and has earned the title of Young Marine Corporal. The Young Marines is an excellent way for young people to develop responsibility, self-discipline and good leadership skills. Erik has been with this program for almost two years and loves it!

Dance the Night Away!

Pikes Peak Prep held it’s first Homecoming Dance at Hillside Community Center. High school students were allowed to bring a date and free pizza and pop were served to all that attended. Math instructor, Andrew Pompelia was the DJ and spun tunes that the students enjoyed.

Decorated in a casino theme, students dressed in their best party wear. Yearbook Club used this dance as an opportunity to raise funds to help with the production of the Yearbook this year. There was an entrance fee of $5.00 and students were given the opportunity to bring a guest. Chaperons consisted of a handful of parents, teachers and administration.

This was such a huge success that it has created discussion centered around Spring Prom.

Pikes Peak Prep had seven science club members, three parents and one guest attend the Colorado Springs Science Festival Carnival Kick-Off at UCCS last week. Students stretched their minds (and their school weeks) at this event on a Saturday. Students had the opportunity to experience a myriad of hands-on activities as well as attend two special presentations: Matter and The Chemistry of Magic. A great time was had by all!

We have completed our unit on Europe and are currently studying the geography, major landforms and topography, along with the different countries of Asia – as well as their capitals. The students are engaged in an awesome map project detailing the countries and capitals of Asia – they are looking great!

United States History:

We are studying the earliest European settlements in the U.S.; Roanoke, Jamestown, Plymouth, and the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The students will know and understand why the Europeans wanted to come to America for reasons beyond religious persecution. We will explore the adventures and hardships of these first European settlers in America.

World History:

Our Unit on Europe was an excellent success – we researched different European countries, studied the landforms and geography of the region, located many European countries and their capitals on a variety of maps. Our research project had each student focus on a different European country, presented the information to the class, and created trivia question to use for European Jeopardy!

Government:

We have been focusing on the importance of the Framers of the Constitution and the impact the Constitution still has on our lives and government today. Students have engaged in lively debates regarding what is and is not constitutional. Aside from the basic ideas of the Constitution, we have explored the meaning behind many of its ideals. Along with the Constitution, we have discussed the amendments, and how they have impacted our lives today.

The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile offered checkups, immunizations, sports physicals and medical and dental care for our Pikes Peak Prep students on September 21^st and 22^ndat the school. Appointments were scheduled and families were able to take advantage of this great service.

The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile™ is a state-of-the-art vehicle that delivers cost-effective medical and dental services directly to children in their own neighborhoods. The RMCM is designed and built specifically as a pediatric healthcare center providing care for children ages 0-21. The center offers a range of services from preventative routine exams to same-day treatment of acute illness and injury, on-going primary care, immunizations and school and sports physicals.

Our Middle College Program at Pikes Peak Prep

· Uniform Reminders: Please remember to wear proper uniform EVERY day. See page 6 in the handbook if you have questions about the dress code.

· Progress Reports should be read and signed by parents every Friday, to be returned to the teacher by Monday. Students getting a “Needs Improvement” or ‘Poor” in the homework row is indicative of the student not turning in work. Please reinforce the importance of completing your work.

· Tutoring: I will contact you if your student is to be coming to tutoring.

· Homework will be written in the daily planner. Students turn in homework daily, so it is important that they are staying on top of their homework. Nightly homework includes:

o Read 20 minutes and Reading Journal- This nightly reading is critical to your students reading development. Each student has a reading journal to write in.

o Finish Daily Math

o Finish any other unfinished work from class- Unfinished work is to be finished as homework.

· Literacy: We will be focusing on the skills necessary to summarize and then will be writing summaries.

· Math: Students are continuing to master estimation, rounding, answering word problems, and using visual models with addition and subtraction.

· Science: Time permitting, we will begin our astronomy unit.

· Social Studies: Third grade will finish the geography unit about reading maps, oceans, continents, major rivers, and the location of our community.

· Writing: Students are learning to write high quality descriptive paragraphs. We continue to emphasize the writing process.

· Character: The character trait for October is respect.

7^th Grade: Photosynthesis

In order for all cells to live they must create energy. For plants, that process is known as Photosynthesis which takes place in the chloroplast organelles. In order for this process to occur, plants require 3 things: Sun, CO₂ and Water. These compounds are then converted in to simple sugars in the form of glucose (C₆H₁₂O₆). Students will learn how this process can in turn create new cells which allow the cells to replicate and the plant to grow.

8^th Grade: Phases of the Moon

The Moon, Earth’s only satellite, plays an important part in the tides we experience each day and like all other heavenly bodies, has its own schedule to which time and events can be measured. Students will understand the moon has a small gravitational force on the Earth that actually causes a bulging which results in high and low tides. The will also discover the phases of the moon, the rise and set, and that the dark side of the moon is really a science misconception.

Biology: Populations

In an ecosystem, survival for any organism depends on the population in which it lives. Students will learn that in order for a species/population to exist, there must be a careful balance in the symbiotic relationships that are present, the niches, the geographical location, and what climatic factors are present. This also must include the natural processes such as emigration, immigration and population density.

Chemistry: Chemical Reactions

All matter is comprised of pure elements or compounds. In order for new compounds to form, bonds must be broken and new ones formed. This breaking and forming change the characteristic of the matter and will now behave in a different way. Students will learn that these reactions will happen in 6 different ways. Students will also learn to balance chemical equations in an effort to understand the Law of Conservation of Mass.

Earth Science: Weathering and Erosion

Weathering and Erosion are natural processes which shape the earth’s surface. Students will learn that there are 2 types of weathering: chemical and mechanical. They will also learn that the rate at which these occur are dependent upon the climate, moisture, soil type, and precipitation. In an effort to conserve our resources, it is necessary to examine the causes and look toward ways to prevent.

French Club Enjoys Crepes

French Club became the most popular club last week when they served crepes to all its club members. The club swelled from 20 members to 40 members for the week. Fluid Flexible Skill Grouping

At Pikes Peak Prep we always begin instruction where students are. If a child is behind where they should be, we work with them in a group for that specific skill. Once that skill is mastered they move on to the next skill. These groups are fluid. Students move in and out of various groups based on their needs. An example may be a third grade girl who is strong in reading, but struggles with math. For reading, she may be in a skill group working on a 6th grade skill. However, in math she may temporarily be in a fluid skill group working on a second grade skill. Once, she masters this skill, she immediately transitions into the next level group.

Pikes Peak Prep is a free public charter school and is committed to ensure that all students show growth in character, academics, life skills, the arts, and wellness using teaching skills tailored to meet the needs of each student.

We are one of a very few schools offering a Middle College program, which allows our qualifying high school students to take real college courses for real college credit – and it’s free of charge to our students and their families.

Our Middle College program is only one reason to attend Pikes Peak Prep.

Our curriculum and our teaching methods are designed to let your child excel as fast as their ability allows. This kind of competency-based approach lets kids of higher ability progress past students their same age. It also permits students to regroup, master material not mastered at a more restrictive school, then, with new-found confidence, race toward their academic potential.

About Charter Schools

Charter schools are free, public schools in Colorado that have been “freed” from some of the rules and regulations that apply to traditional public schools and other private and parochial schools, but that are held to a different level of accountability. Because charter schools are actually created by the approval of a “charter,” the terms of the charter must be met in order for the charter school to remain open.

While charter schools obtain funding from the State, they only receive a portion of the funds that go to traditional public schools. Charter schools do receive the funds that follow a student in Colorado from public school to public school, but they do not receive the transportation funds and capital funds that traditional public schools receive.

Charter schools are developed by extremely dedicated individuals whose goal is to serve a particular population of students that, in their charter, they have shown is currently underserved. Because of the dedication and vision of the schools’ founders, charter schools can fair pretty well despite the drastically reduced funding, but funding and a tight budget are always issues.

PPP Volleyball Gets Underway

Pikes Peak Prep held their first home volleyball game for the season. An incredible number of spectators arrived to see the elementary and middle school matches. Both our teams were able to put together some great serving in order to win their matches against Colorado Springs Charter Academy. The little Eaglets (first – third grade cheerleaders) helped heighten the team spirit. PTO participated by selling pizza at this event.

Now that Scientific Calculators for Pikes Peak Prep has all the support needed, it will soon become a reality in Mr. Pompelia's classroom.

I cannot thank you enough for your generous donations. I told my students that I was working to get a class set of calculators donated and when I told them today that it was actually becoming a reality they were beyond excited. Now I'll work to channel that excitement into some serious learning! We very much enjoyed tracking this project's progress for the last few weeks and I know how appreciative my students will be when they have these calculators in their hands.

Eagles Inspire Winning

Over 20 first, second and third graders are cheering our volleyball team to victory. These little Eaglets worked hard to excite the crowd at our first home volleyball game this year. The cheer team learned four cheers during the last week and received additional direction from some of our girls from high school. Dressed in their little light blue shirts, ribbons in hair and pom poms in hand the Eaglets definitely showed their spirit and inspired our elementary and middle school teams to put together winning matches. Come and experience their next performance at our home volleyball game on September 22 at 4:30 p.m.

Science Experiment

The fifth grade designed an experiment to test the scientific question of whether orange soda or diet coke would cause a larger explosion when mixed with Mentos. The class then organized their data and came to the conclusion that diet coke causes the bigger explosion. This experiment was done to study the processes of the scientific method and was conducted in an outside environment.

7^th and 8^th Grade:

Students began the year with a basic review of map skills, longitude and latitude, and the compass rose. We are now fully immersed in studying the seven continents. We have completed our units on North and South America, Asia, Africa, and Europe. We are currently studying the geography, major landforms and topography, along with the different territories of Australia.

United States History:

To begin the study of America, one must examine this continent before the arrival of the Europeans. We studied the early migrations of the Native Americans, and their effect on this land. Along with the Native Americans, we studied the different European explorers and their impacts both on this continent and on Europe. We will begin to look at early Colonial America and its beginnings in our next unit.

World History:

To begin the year, students completed a basic review of map skills, understanding different types of maps, projection, and latitude and longitude. Our first unit covered the countries, topography, climate, and culture of North and South America. All World History students should be able to identify at least 8 different countries in North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Our next unit will focus on the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia.

Government:

What are rights? Why is it important to have a Constitution? These are just two issues that students have been debating in Government class. This past unit has covered basic civil rights and liberties, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and differences between a constitutional and dictatorial government. Our next unit will focus on the importance of the Framers of the Constitution and the impact the Constitution still has today.

Lady Eagles Volleyball Team

The Lady Eagles volleyball team have been practicing for the past week. Coached by Ms. Johnson and Ms. Alexander the team had only two practices before they had their first match at Colorado Springs Charter Academy. Many of the girls have never played this sport, so the accomplishment was amazing for our fourth - sixth grade Lady Eagles team to win the match. The girls soon learned that it’s all about the serve and many of the girls proved that they could power the ball over the net.

Three of our sixth graders had to play for the seventh – eighth Lady Eagles team since we only had three seventh graders. This provided these players plenty of playing time. They were able to win one game, and let their opponent barely squeeze out a win with a score of 14-15. The team spirit started to come alive as the girls provided support to each other. The Lady Eagles have started to take flight.

Plan on attending our next home game at Pikes Peak Prep on Tuesday, September 7th at 4:30. We will be entertained by the 1st – 3rd grade Eaglets cheer team. This cheerleading team, consisting of 27 little girls, will be coached by Ms. Murphy. Don’t miss it!

Hello parents and students and welcome back for the 2011-2012 school year! I am very excited to be teaching your children all about the visual arts. This year promises to be the best yet because I am full time and will be spending more time with students. This year I decided to charge an art fee for each student. The reason for this was to save you time and money. The school is able to purchase the supplies we need in bulk, which is more cost effective, for example: a sketchbook alone costs $4 to $5 dollars and the school can get them for $2. The $5 fee buys the following for each student:

1. Sketchbook

2. Portfolio

3. Markers, crayons, colored pencils

4. White glue, Glue sticks

5. Water color paints, acrylic paints

6. Specialty paper

7. Any other supplies we need for our projects

To start out the year our focus will be on space and form. During this unit K-6^th grade students will be doing six projects. Each project will take about one week to complete.

7^th, 8^th, and High School will begin by studying Marcel Duchamp and the Dada movement. We will also learn about the work of Joseph Cornell, Louise Nevelson, and Daniel Spoerri, among others. Students will complete an “assemblage” art project where they will be using/altering everyday objects to create a work of art.

Coach Johnson, Physical Education

KindergartenKindergarten has been busy mastering locomotor skills. We have been practicing how to skip, gallop, run, walk backwards and walk sideways. In addition we have been learning how to perform these skills while maintaining personal space. These skills are important to master in order to progress to game play. They are doing a terrific job and we will continue to acquire new locomotor skills as we progress.

First GradeFirst grade has been refining their locomotor skills. Some movements including but not limited to: running, hopping, galloping and skipping. In addition they have also been refining their ability to stay within their personal space and practice safe behavior while locomoting.They have done a wonderful job and we have been able to move onto some tag games.

Second GradeSecond grade is improving their fitness and cardiovascular health. They have been doing warm up runs to improve their fitness and prepare them for physical activity. They have learned the importance of getting enough vitamin A through a tag game called “healthy eye tag”. They have also played capture the football and capture the frisbee.

Third GradeThird grade is also improving their fitness and cardiovascular health with warm up runs. They have played three tag games including: healthy eye tag, partner tag and frisbee tag. Third grade is also mastering their throwing and catching skills through practice with classmates and through game play. They have played capture the frisbee and capture the football.

Fourth GradeFourth grade is mastering throwing and catching skills. So far they have learned how to correctly throw and catch a frisbee. After practicing their throwing and catching skills, they were able to play capture the frisbee and learn strategies to use during game play. They are also working on their fitness levels with warm up runs.

Fifth GradeFifth grade started out the school year by learning how to be a team player. They practiced this by working in cooperative groups using jump bands. They also learned to work cooperatively together with a partner through activities that used playing cards while incorporating math mastery. Fifth grade is also refining their throwing and catching skills with footballs and frisbees.

Sixth GradeSixth grade has worked on their throwing and catching skills through practice with a partner and game play. Games played included boccer, ultimate Frisbee and capture the football. Sixth grade also started out the school year with team building activities. The activities included playing card relays and jump bands.

Seventh GradeSeventh grade has learned the importance of working together as a team through team building activities. Some activities they participated in included: jump bands and card relays. They have also played games that included capture the frisbee and capture the football. These games have improved their throwing and catching skills.

Eighth GradeEighth grade has been refining their catching and throwing skills. They have accomplished this by working in cooperative groups and through game play. Games that included: boccer, ultimate frisbee and ultimate football. They also complete warm up laps to prepare them for physical activity.

Ninth GradeNinth grade has been improving their physical fitness by performing a dynamic warm up. Their warm ups have also included pushups and sit ups. Soon we will start fitness testing. They have also participated in team building activities that included card relays and jump bands. These team building activities have transferred to their game play as a class. They have played some great games that included boccer, capture the football and ultimate frisbee.

Lady Eagles Volleyball TeamWe have two teams that include fourth through sixth grade and seventh through eighth grade. We played our first game against Colorado Springs Charter School on August 30th. Both of our teams played excellent games, with our younger players winning their match.

Michael Snell never expected he would be receiving a high school diploma from Pikes Peak Prep and an Associate’s degree from Pikes Peak Community College simultaneously. His intelligence and strong work ethic earned him the honor as the 2011 Pikes Peak Prep Valedictorian.

Michael is a native of Colorado and was born at Memorial Hospital. His parents divorced and he ended up living with his dad who was a self-employed mason. The family had some difficult times that lead to family stress and finally Michael moved in with his mom. Michael joined Pikes Peak Prep four years ago and was able to take college classes and earn dual credits with Pikes Peak Prep. He was the first in his immediate family to get a college degree and other than his mom a high school diploma. Michael explained “I will be graduating college with my Bachelor’s degree by the time I am twenty years old. Not many people have the opportunity to finish early with very little school debt. I am so relieved that I don’t have to worry about student loans since Pikes Peak Prep paid for the tuition, books and transportation through their Middle College Program. It makes it so much easier for me and my family that they didn’t have to worry about paying for my Associate’s Degree.” Michael plans on continuing his education at CSU Pueblo.

Pikes Peak Prep held a small and intimate graduation ceremony at Colorado College. Of the four graduates, two of the students (Kennedy Collier, Anthony Dorner) were able to graduate early by completing all required credits within three years. The other graduate, Quintin Terrell, and Kennedy plan on joining the armed forces. Anthony Dorner will work and continue going to college and Michael Snell will be heading down to CSU Pueblo to continue his education focused on a Computer Information degree.

The ceremony included speakers Walt Glover, Pikes Peak Prep Board President and USOC CFO, Kevin Teasley, GEO (Greater Educational Opportunities) Founder and the principal of Pikes Peak Prep, Dr. Patricia Arnold. Cathy Robbins, Vice President of the El Pomar Foundation was the keynote speaker for the ceremony. Her message included some key statistical information:
84% or more are the average earnings a college graduate receives over a high school graduate.

9.7% is the current unemployment rate for high school graduates and 4.5% is the current unemployment rate for college graduates.

$800,000 - $1,000,000 is the difference in lifetime earnings for a college graduate over a high school graduate.

Lower risk of heart disease. There has been a thirty year study of thousands of people that have shown that there is significantly higher rate of blood pressure with high school graduates leading to an increased risk of heart disease.

Ms. Robbins speech reinforced Pikes Peak Prep’s belief in the importance of a strong educational foundation that will lead their students to college.

The ceremony concluded with a reception for the families, friends, staff and graduates that was hosted by Mike Edmonds of Colorado College.

We are so excited to begin the 2011 -2012 school year! We are thrilled to have so many familiar faces returning to our school; we also have a number of families that are with us for the first time to whom we would like to extend a warm welcome. Our entire staff looks forward to working with your children and providing them excellent educational opportunities. Pikes Peak Prep has a student-first focus where instruction, curriculum, and programs are designed to insure student growth and success. We individualize instruction to capitalize on student strength’s and interests and backfill any gaps in learning and areas of weakness.

We are very proud to offer our students a safe respectful learning environment in which they can thrive. We believe all children can and want to learn, and it is our responsibility to see this to fulfillment. We model and exemplify values of respect for self, others, time, and property.

The new school year is always a fun and exciting time for returning students who anticipate to see their old friends, meet their new teachers, and improve upon past performances. This year at Pikes Peak Prep, the students will continue to work diligently to achieve high test scores, improve upon many educational skills, and enjoy the new school year with their peers. The teachers will continue to challenge the students to ensure that they are learning the necessary skills and tools needed to succeed in future classroom settings. Pikes Peak Prep has many success stories from the past years, so why not add more this year? The new students as well as those familiar to the school should expect another school year filled with new goals that will provide for a more challenging yet very exciting time to learn and grow in our charter school.

Open House

Pikes Peak Prep held an open house for all families that will be attending this fall. The gym overflowed with parents and students listening carefully to Prinicipal, Dr. Arnold as she welcomed students and families, shared the increased academic achievement of students demonstrated on CSAP last school year, and reviewed student academic and behavior expectations. After, families had the opportunity to visit with the staff in their homerooms. Our new students were so excited and the entire school community had a sense of energy and anticipation for the first day of school. Families were provided time to purchase planners, ask questions, and meet with the music, art and Spanish teachers.

To insure that all of our students succeed, Pikes Peak Prep employs diagnostic and prescriptive teaching. We do baseline testing of all our students for the purpose of identifying areas of strength, weaknesses, and any gaps in learning. This information then allows teachers to tailor their teaching in a very prescriptive way, much like a doctor treats problems, to backfill the gaps and build the weak areas with intervention strategies. By doing this, students are able to successfully move forward in learning without have a deficit. On-going formative assessment is routinely conducted, so that adjustments and course corrections can be made when and where needed.

Free College: Partnerships

Pikes Peak Prep is deeply proud – and just as grateful – to have established educational partnerships with Pikes Peak Community College and with the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

PPCC was quick to agree with the theory behind our Middle College program. “Middle College” is a collaboration between a high school and a college or university to allow high school students who qualify to enroll in and take college courses for credit. Students take a combination of core high school courses and college courses to receive their diploma and graduate. The core classes are provided by teachers employed by the high school while the college courses are taken alongside real college students at the college.

One of the many goals of a Middle College program is simply to expose high school students who might not otherwise enroll in higher education to the college environment, demystify the college experience, and get those students working toward degrees. This helps the students, many of whom will be the first generation in their families to attend college, to build a solid belief in themselves, to stay in school and succeed, and to integrate directly into college from high school.

Pikes Peak Prep: "Breaking the Ice"

Pikes Peak Prep “Connections” was about “Breaking the Ice”. I know it’s still summer, but for a new student starting this fall, baby its cold outside! New teenage students foster some enormous fears and anxiety around new school, new teachers, new friends, new schedule, etc. So to help break the ice we had 2 days scheduled with 2 -1 ½ sessions of team building exercises for our Jr. high and high school students both new and returning. What a concept! The returning students welcomed our new students with open arms and fresh ideas that only kids can take ownership to as Ms. Ramey and myself jumped right into physical challenges such as the hula hoop pass and managed to endure the “support” and “mental challenge” exercises with great enthusiasm. Extremely positive feedback came from parents and students as we ended each session with root-beer floats. Now that warmed things up!

Free College Credit Courses

We are extremely proud to offer our high school students entrance into our Middle College program at Pikes Peak Prep, where they can take free college courses for real college credit.

Middle College is a collaboration between a high school and a college or university to allow high school students who qualify to enroll in and take college courses for credit. Students take a combination of core high school courses and college courses to receive their diploma and graduate. The core classes are provided by teachers employed by the high school while the college courses are taken alongside real college students at the college.

One of the many goals of a middle college program is simply to expose high school students who might not otherwise enroll in higher education to the college environment, demystify the college experience, and get those students working toward degrees. This helps the students, many of whom will be the first generation in their families to attend college, to build a solid belief in themselves, to stay in school and succeed, and to integrate directly into college from high school.

Pikes Peak Prep continues to strive to update classroom materials and provide new ways for students to learn in innovative ways.
